Finance Module

Financial decision-making forms the basis for a company's continuity. This includes the evaluation of alternative investments options as well as the analysis and implementation of financial structures.

The Finance Module consists of the following courses:

1. Financial Accounting for International Business Leaders

PROGRAM FOCUS
The program provides managers with a business-oriented introduction to key financial accounting concepts. The course covers such fundamentals as balance sheets and income statements, as well as looking at the operational and leadership perspectives of accounting. One session deals with financial instruments and provides an understanding of the causes that led to the financial crisis. Finally, the course allows participants to learn how to evaluate financial statements, with a particular focus on International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), which will be discussed with special attention to doing business in China.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
Jens Wüstemann is Professor of Accounting and Auditing at the University of Mannheim. He studied business administration at Goethe University Frankfurt and Université Paris IX Dauphine and complemented his career internationally as a  visiting scholar at Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania), Stern School of Business (NYU), and ESSEC Business School in Paris.

As an author of several textbooks on financial accounting, Jens Wüstemann's research activities focus on international accounting (IFRS), accounting theory and corporate valuation.

Amongst others, he is member of the executive board of the Deutsches Rechnungslegungs Standards Committee (DRSC) – German Accounting Standards Committee – and member of a working group of the European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG). In addition, Jens Wüstemann is President of Mannheim Business School.

2. Corporate Finance

PROGRAM FOCUS
The capital structure and refinancing costs of a company are important indicators of its financial health and ability to attract capital from investors and markets. In order to remain competitive and to avoid becoming a target for potential take-overs, organizations have to manage their finances effectively and earn premiums on the capital employed. This course enables the participants to attain an understanding of the key issues in corporate finance, including company valuation, costs of capital, and risk premiums.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
Sandeep Dahiya is Associate Professor at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, where he has been teaching since 1999. He received his Ph.D. from the Stern School of Business, New York University, and his MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. Before getting his Ph.D., Dahiya worked for ICICI Bank, India's second largest Bank. He has also worked for the Corporate Finance and Strategy practice of McKinsey & Company.

Dahiya specializes in Corporate Finance, Corporate Restructuring, Banking and Financial Institutions. His research examines the benefits of establishing strong lending relationships for banks and their corporate borrowers. He has also  examined portfolio decisions of international funds and the evolution of financial exchanges. His research has been published in several leading academic journals.

Dahiya has worked with CEOs and CFOs of Fortune 500 firms in Healthcare, Financial Services and Chemical industries, focusing on Valuation, Mergers & Acquisitions, Capital Markets and Risk Management issues. He has also consulted for leading law firms on corporate finance issues.

3. Taxation Strategy for Multinationals in the Asia-Pacific Region

PROGRAM FOCUS
International enterprises are frequently confronted with heterogeneous business taxation practices in the Asia-Pacific Region. As a result, companies have to align their organization, finance and distribution channels to different tax conditions and aim to optimize their tax situation while considering all other company objectives. This course focuses on the taxation systems in the Asia-Pacific Region and shows how strategies can be adapted to make the most of the various tax  regimes, with a particular focus on China.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
Christoph Spengel has been Professor of Business Administration and Taxation at the University of Mannheim since 2006. Before his appointment in Mannheim, he held positions at the University of Hamburg, the University of Gießen, the University of Vienna (WU), and Oxford University.

Professor Spengel has specialized and focuses his research efforts on topics regarding international taxation. He is a member of the expert group "Harmonizing Corporate Tax Bases in the EU" at the Center for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels and has been a valued expert to different national and regional bodies, such as the European Commission. Further, Spengel acts as a referee on the editorial boards of national and international publications and journals. He is also a member of different tax-related associations (e.g. IFA and EATLP) and on the Board of the Ernst & Young Foundation.

4. Soft Skill Course: Cooperation in Multi-Cultural Teams

PROGRAM FOCUS
In today's global marketplace companies frequently face difficult cultural situa-tions, where managers encounter differing values and perceptions.  In order to succeed in an intertwined business world, managers have to develop special skills and an international mindset. This workshop on cross-cultural management, which focuses on China and Germany, will sensitize participants with more or less transnational experience and help them to transfer their skills from a domestic to an international context.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT
Jacques Pateau is Professor of Inter-cultural Communication and Man-agement at the Compiègne Universi-ty of Technology. His PhD was devoted to an extensive study of the cultural factors in corporate organi-zation, management and communi-cation.

Pateau is the founder of Pateau Consultants, which has trained more than 25.000 managers of large in-ternational corporations since 1992, mainly in multicultural teambuilding and team development sessions, called "Bridges", enabling them to get a better understanding of the intercultural factors influencing their business.

Pateau has published numerous works and articles. His book "Une étrange alchimie: la dimension in-terculturelle dans la cooperation franco-allemande" was well received and published in Germany under the  title "Die seltsame Alchimie in der Zusammenarbeit zwischen Deut-schen und Franzosen: aus der Praxis des interkulturellen Managements".
